Maria is a National Geographic Explorer and documentary photographer based in Barcelona, Spain. She tells people’s stories with an intimate and personal approach, combining long-term practice and research.
Maria sees photography as a tool for transformation and is interested in highlighting how women are redefining social structures in different contexts and religions. She is a member of Women Photograph, her work has been published in The New York Times and National Geographic Spain among others, and she recently received a National Catalan Culture Award for her trajectory.
For Foodprint, Maria visited the Portuguese island of Culatra to capture how the local community of shellfish pickers is affected by pollution, rising temperatures and overfishing, and to explore how their livelihoods are tied to the sea.
